Live from Woss Vegas

Congratulations Jake Misky, Carihi Forestry Program student and this year's recipient of the Mike McInnes Memorial Forestry Award. All the best in your pursuit to work in the forest industry and become a Professional Forester!

This annual award commemorates Mike McInnes, who was fatally injured in an accident at a marshalling point near Woss, BC in November of 2011. Mike worked for HDL as part of the road crew. In honour of Mike, this Memorial Forestry Award will support young individuals with aspirations of a career in the forestry and logging industry.

The City of Campbell River’s Forestry Task Force has released their first video Our Forests, Our People, Our Future, which highlights the importance and influence that the local forestry sector has on our community.

The video was completed with the support of local businesses including: Holbrook Dyson Logging, Strategic Natural Resource Consultants, Homalco Forestry, Western Forest Products, Capacity Forest Management and North Island Employment Foundation Society. It was produced by Tremain Media.

2016 Highlights

  • 2016 was a busy year – we met our contractual commitments for WFP, completed a contract in the the Artlish for Storey Creek, and started logging in our own timber sale in McIver

  • While WFP merged Mid Island, Englewood and Gold River Divisions to create the new Central Island Forest Operation, there was no direct impact of this merger on our operations. Both HDL and Newcastle Timber continued to operate on TFL 37 & 39 respectively on 5 and 2 shifts. This is expected to continue in 2017.

  • As well, WFP gave us some incremental volumes which helped extend our operating year, as well as a tough clean up block to yard in NA010

  • As has been the norm, we logged some second growth at HDL, and will continue to do more flat land logging in January and February

  • Logging in the McIver sale in the next few months will be advantageous as log prices for export/cedar logs are now very favourable

  • August – proved to be exceptionally warm and dry and we were forced to shutdown for fire hazard a few times

  • Fortunately we had a successful Fall and met our production targets for the year

  • Rate negotiations were again drawn out at both operations; however, HDL managed to agree on rate for 2016 harvesting last week… we start on 2017!

Safety, as always, continues to be the prime focus at HDL and we commend our employees for making safety a priority, especially where we have new/young workers employed at the operations. Our operation underwent successful recertification audits during the year. Again, we scored high marks on both BC Forest Safety Council audits and were commended by the external auditor who performed HDL’s audit on maintaining a consistent, high level of safety performance. Thank you to all our crews and supervisors for continuing to make HDL a safe place to work!

While HDL went through a rash of incidents early in the year, there were no major incidents over the last 7 months. This year our Injury Management program worked successfully to get a couple of workers back to regular duties.

It is anticipated 2017 will be another busy year. HDL is slated to log in the timber sale through January, February and March (depending on weather) and will commence delivering second growth volume in February. HDL will harvest its contractual volume with WFP and construct over 13 km of road during 2017.

Finally, check out our Facebook page… you can even follow @HDLogging on Twitter for people on social media.

Thank you to our employees for your efforts in 2016 to make HDL a great place to work!

We wish you and your families a healthy and safe New Year!
